You Can Choose Focus

by | May 17, 2023

No matter what is going on, you can choose focus.

I know there’s a lot going on in your life, in the world … but you can focus no matter what. Here are 4 steps I take:

  • Turn off distractions. Turn off anything that’s going to ding or flash at you. Put your phone in airplane mode. Turn on Do Not Disturb. Close out email.
  • Set up your space. One of the reasons I love co-working spaces is the lack of clutter. Don’t go clean your whole office right now. Do move anything you don’t need for your focused work off your desk. Just set it on another table or the floor. What else can you do to make your workspace comfortable? Turn on a fan. Put on a sweater. Fill up your water.
  • Set a timer. Our brains aren’t meant to focus all the time. So set a time for focus (we do two 37-minute sprints in Focus Sessions based on brain science). The timer tells you that you aren’t trying to focus indefinitely. It also sets a boundary you can share with others. I’m focusing for the next 90 minutes. If you need me, I’ll be checking in at 1:30.
  • Pick one thing. Write your one task on a Post-it note. Notice I said ONE thing. I know you have more than one thing you want to get done. Write one. Do one. And while you are picking that task, pick one that you can realistically fit into your timeframe. Set yourself up to focus on one thing without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
